HC jails ex-Cumilla chief judicial magistrate for contempt of court

Shawdesh Desk:

The High Court on Thursday sentenced Md Sohel Rana, a former chief judicial magistrate in Cumilla, to suffer in jail for 30 days for committing contempt of court.

The court also fined Sohel Rana Tk 5,000 and directed him to surrender before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Dhaka within seven days.

The HC bench of Justice Md Badruzzaman and Justice SM Masud Hossain Dolon passed the order.

The court, within three hours of passing the order, granted Sohel Rana bail for 30 days as the convict surrendered before the court and sought bail, informing the court that he would appeal against the HC order.

Sohel Rana had earlier passed an order in Cumilla ignoring the High Court’s order and the HC asked him to explain why the court would not initiate a contempt of court case.

Sohel Rana later sought unconditional apology to the High Court for his acts.

However, the High Court did not accept his unconditional apology and sentenced him to 30 days’ sumple imprisonment.

Sohel Rana is now attached to the Law Ministry as an additional district judge, officials said.
